Breast Milk Ice Cream

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

I've always wanted to make this. I don't buy cows milk, so I thought it would be cool if I made baby boy his own special ice cream. But how?

Then I remembered what I learned in elementary school and how they taught us to make ice cream using ice, salt and sandwich bags and...it worked! I gave Jai a little taste and he liked it. And I'm sure it felt good on his gums since he's teething. Plus, it's perfect for those hot, summer days.

What you'll need

  • 2 ziploc sandwich bags

  • a cup of ice

  • 2 tbsp of coarse salt

  • 3oz of breast milk

  • a tiny drop of vanilla extract (optional)

  • a pinch of organic sugar (optional)

Put one cup of ice into one of the ziploc bags, then add 2 tbsp of coarse salt on top of the ice.

Pour 3oz of freshly expressed breast milk into your other ziploc bag, let out most of the air and close the bag.

IF you decide to use vanilla, make sure it's pure vanilla. You don't need much. If you use sugar, I suggest organic sugar and only use a pinch.

Place the bag with breast milk into the bag with the ice and salt and close the bag.

Now, it's time to shake. You might want to use a towel to keep your hands from getting too cold. This is what it looks like after only 4 minutes of shaking.

Shake for just a few more minutes and your done. Your breast milk ice cream is ready to serve. It will melt pretty fast, so if you like, put it in the freezer for a minute or two to firm it up some more. You can also add fresh fruit, like chopped berries just to add a little more flavor. Next time, I'll pick some fresh strawberries from my garden.
